Know Your Rights: Navigating Law Enforcement and Immigration Policies with ACLU Texas
Crucial Resources from ACLU Texas
As immigration policies and their enforcement continue to change, we see more and more speculation about what people would do if confronted by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and concerns about what they could legally do to limit or prevent the interaction. The Texas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU TX, has been and continues to be active in helping each of us know our rights in various situations.
Of foremost concern at this point in history is the question of our rights in interactions with law enforcement and immigration officials. While ACLU TX always has the opportunity available to request Know Your Rights training for various scenarios, they have particularly risen to the occasion recently in offering no-registration, bilingual, online Know Your Rights Trainings on this prescient topic. You can find more about the dates and links for these trainings here. As well as information about what to do if ICE comes to your workplace, what to do during an immigration raid, and what to do if you’re stopped by ICE, the FBI, or other law enforcement.
What if you wanted to know about your rights to abortion in Texas? Or what rights you have to protest as a university student? Or any resident? ACLU TX has information for all of these scenarios and so many more. We highly encourage you to explore the Know Your Rights section of their website.
It may seem like more work, or like you already know what your rights are. However, for those who intend to live their lives within the law, or exercise their rights without having them unknowingly infringed upon, it can be very helpful to know the boundaries of our own conduct and the conduct of law and immigration enforcement. Knowing our rights and exercising them are two of the first and most important steps to making sure that our rights are maintained.
Stay informed, stay empowered, and share this with those who need it.
